History of Upper Crust
Upper Crust is a chain of baguette restaurants primarily located in busy commuter hubs like train stations and airports. The term “upper crust” originally referred to the aristocracy, as noted in an 1823 sports slang dictionary by Jon Bee (a pseudonym for John Badcock), describing someone who acts superior to others.
Branches can be found at the central railway station in Oslo and at the Elkjøp Megastore in Lørenskog, Norway. Since September 2008, there are also three locations in Stockholm, Sweden—two at the central railway station and one at the nearby Cityterminalen bus terminal. Additional branches are located at Gothenburg Central Station and Euston Station in London.
The company has begun expanding into shopping centers, including a new store at Bridgend Designer Outlet in South Wales. They also operate in various airports, such as Cairo Airport, Tromsø Airport, Trondheim Værnes Airport, Oslo Airport Gardermoen, Helsinki Airport, George Bush Intercontinental Airport, and Gran Canaria Airport. Previously, there were also locations in Australia, including Circular Quay.
The first Upper Crust branch opened in 1986 at London Waterloo Station, operated by Travellers Fare, the catering division of British Rail. The chain is now owned by SSP.
During the COVID-19 pandemic in the United Kingdom, SSP announced plans to cut 5,000 jobs across its brands, including Upper Crust and Caffè Ritazza, as part of a restructuring effort to navigate challenging times.
